Description

Taking viewers on a journey from eastern Canada to north-west Scotland, and on to mainland Europe, this program reveals the central role of the major ocean current known as the Gulf Stream in warming the coast of northern Europe. 3-D graphics clearly illustrate the conveyor belt that carries warm water northwards from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic, then cool water back along the ocean floor. We learn how studies of ancient sediments and ice cores reveal a series of sudden warmings during the Ice Age, each followed by abrupt cooling. Oceanographers explain how, as the Arctic ice melts, the Gulf Stream loses strength due to declining salinity.
