Description

Infectious disease is still a major influence on the quality of life experienced by most of humanity. We are all familiar with, to some extent, the effect they have on us. Just over fifty years ago, our hospitals were used for isolation of patients suffering from incurable infectious diseases. Fortunately, things have improved for us and we only occasionally experience such disease. This is not the case in other less developed countries, where infectious diseases are still common. Although the twentieth century seemed to be the golden age for the treatment of infectious human disease, scientists are warning that the battle is certainly not over. Topics covered include: Causes of infectious diseases, disease agents, disease transmission, controlling infectious diseases, the response to infection, vaccination, disease prevention and treatment. The program ends with a note about the ongoing challenges we face in managing infectious diseases around the world.
