This is a study of the issues surrounding human life away from Earth. It includes footage from the Apollo, Pathfinder and Viking space missions, and from the two-year Biosphere 2 experiment of human life in a self-contained, closed system. In 1991, eight researchers entered Biosphere2 and stayed there for two years. They wanted to see if it was possible to live in a man-made sealed environment for long periods of time. There were four men and four women. They had to plant and harvest crops, which included corn and wheat, so that they would have enough to eat. During the experiment there was an unusually high number of cloudy days and the crops did not produce as much food as expected. Other topics covered include Mars and making it habitable for plants and humans, The Moon and building a base there, and the Biosphere2 where humans lived as a rehearsal for space travel. The teacher's notes include great activities and thought provoking experiments.
