Description

Galileo's amazing observation that a pendulum always completes its swing over the same period of time, no matter how large it's arc, not only led to the invention of the first accurate clocks but also to Newton's Second Law. That is, force equals mass multiplied by acceleration, and when combined with a restoring force, this leads to a motion that repeats itself over equal periods of time, producing what is know as harmonic motion. In this program we examine how the restoring force and inertia of any stable mechanical system causes objects to execute simple harmonic motion.
