Designed for senior students, this program focuses on three main areas of poetic analysis theme, context and form, giving simple definitions and examples and illustrating them with a wide variety of poetry. The range of poems used is diverse from classics, to modern verse; from both published and unpublished poets. Some of the language and images used are confrontational, some are evocative, some are mysterious, in all cases, the aim is to provide a framework with which students can begin to analyse poetry and compare one poem with another, fostering an appreciation for poetry in its multitude of forms. Excerpts of an interview with Australia's Dorothy Porter are included to help to illustrate some of the points being made. Brief references are also made about poetic devices, including alliteration, similes and metaphors.
