Description

This program examines Earth as a sphere; it defines latitude and longitude and explores how this global referencing system is applied. Following the crew of a 30,000 tonne container ship as they navigate their way around the globe, the areas covered include: great circles and small circles, latitude and longitude defined, finding locations, the relevance of zero longitude and why it passes through Greenwich and why the Equator is zero degrees latitude. We also examine the distance in kilometres between degrees of longitude and why minutes and seconds must be used to describe locations with greater accuracy, how the shortest distance between sea ports is along great circles and how the metre and nautical mile is determined as a unit of measurement.
